"Last chance, Mr Banducci": Woolies CEO threatened with jail time

Outgoing Woolworths CEO Brad Banducci has been threatened with jail time for refusing to answer questions about price gouging at a fiery Senate enquiry. The parliamentary probe into supermarket prices has seen Banducci be grilled by senators about how the supermarket raked in record-breaking profits during the ongoing cost of living crisis. During the enquiry on Tuesday, Banducci was repeatedly warned by committee chair and Greens senator Nick McKim about giving evasive answers when asked about his company's return on equity. Banducci repeatedly told the committee that return on equity was not his focus, and Woolworths is instead more interested in return on investment, refusing the question and prompting a 15-minute adjournment. When the enquiry resumed, a similar exchange occurred, leading to another warning for the Woolworths chief executive. "Last chance, Mr Banducci," McKim said. "Do you accept that return on equity is an accepted measure of the financial profitability of a company?" When Banducci replied that "we measure return on investment", the committee was suspended. Its return immediately saw another round of the same questions and answers, with McKim warning Banducci about the consequences of not answering questions clearly. "It is open to the Senate to hold you in contempt, and that carries potential sanctions including up to six months imprisonment for you," he said after saying the Woolworths boss could simply say he didn't know the answer and take the question on notice. "That's why this is a critical matter so I'd just ask you to address your mind with absolute clarity, please, to the question I am asking." "I put it to you the reason you don't want to focus on return on equity is because you don't like the story that it's telling, which is that you are basically profiteering and making off with massive profits at the expense of farmers at the expense of your workers and at the expense of Australian shoppers who you are price gouging," Greens senator McKim said. The enquiry is still ongoing, with Coles counterpart Leah Weckert set to address the same Senate committee later on Tuesday as the government continues to probe allegations of price gouging. Why Mr Bean is being blamed for decreasing electric vehicle sales

Rowan Atkinson has been blamed for a decrease in electric car sales, with a "damaging" article being debunked in the House of Lords. The actor and comedian, who is also a well-known car enthusiast, wrote an article for The Guardian, claiming he felt "duped" by electric vehicles, saying they aren't as eco-friendly as they are often portrayed. Atkinson says the problem with the vehicles' sustainable marketing focuses on just one part of the car’s operating life: what comes out of the exhaust pipes and ignores other elements such as the manufacturing and the mining of rare earth minerals, shipping and building of the batteries. These claims, and the article itself, have been addressed by the UK's House of Lords, with politicians blaming the story for a decrease in electric vehicle sales. UK think tank the Green Alliance says, “One of the most damaging articles was a comment piece written by Rowan Atkinson in The Guardian which has been roundly debunked.” Other deterrents identified by the committee were the high purchase price and insufficient charging infrastructure. Social media users were quick to take Atkinson's side in the debate, with one person writing on X, “If Rowan Atkinson is responsible, then give him a knighthood.” Another user says, “Rowan Atkinson with a degree and masters in Engineering. Knows more than those pushing electric cars.” "Apparently it's Mr Bean's fault for the poor take up of electric cars. Cancel him," another said. For the last 12 months, high power costs in the UK have meant that fast charging your electric car can be more expensive than refuelling a petrol or diesel vehicle. “A beautiful soul”: Teenager killed in Aus Day boat crash identified

The teenager killed in a fatal boat crash on Australia Day has been identified, as her heartbroken family remember her as a “beautiful soul”. Darcy Davey-Sutherland was enjoying a day on the water when two tinnies collided near the Gray’s Point boat ramp in Sydney’s Sutherlandshire, where the 16-year-old was critically injured. Paramedics arrived on the scene and transported Darcy to St George’s Hospital, where she later died. The 16-year-old was wearing a lifejacket at the time of the crash, and it is believed onlookers found her face down in the water and performed CPR on the teenager until paramedics arrived. Her father, Michael Davey-Sutherland, said his daughter was "the beacon of light within our family" in both the UK and Australia. "She was about to embark on the most special part of life as she stepped into adulthood," Michael told <a href="https://www.9news.com.au/national/sydney-darcy-sutherland-killed-in-grays-point-boat-crash/794e7737-9970-4e41-80b0-4324c4d6db5c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">9News</a>. "Words cannot describe the pain we feel at the moment." Darcy, who was the eldest child and was very close to her two younger brothers, was also fondly remembered by her family and friends online. "I will miss you so much Darc, I feel like I've lost a part of me," one person said. "Will forever love you. You will forever be missed, my beautiful angel, I will never forget our time together," another said. "I pray for your family to find the strength to live with their forever broken heart, keeping your memory alive. Rest beautiful girl," a third added. “He just makes you proud”: AFL star's stunning Anzac Day speech

Darcy Moore, captain of Collingwood Football Club, has been praised across the board for the words he delivered in the wake of his team’s Anzac Day win against Essendon. The Magpies had a lot to celebrate after their comeback win in front of a record-breaking 95,179 person crowd, but it was Moore’s post-game speech that is fixed in the mind of supporters, and anyone else who had had the honour of hearing what he had to say. Moore was accepting the Anzac Day trophy before he gave his speech, and opened with a round of thanks for the thousands of fans - Collingwood and Essendon alike - who had made the trip to be with them on such a momentous day. “First of all, I want to give a massive thank you to the 95,000 fans who are here, [a] record-breaking crowd,” he said. “No matter whether you wear the black and white stripes or the red sash, this game is about so much more than four points. So you turning up today and showing your support means a lot and we’re incredibly proud to play our part in this game. “To Essendon, both Andrew [McGrath] and the team - as well as the broader club - thank you so much for making this event what it is. “It means a lot to us that we can come together with your football club and commemorate the sacrifice of not just the Anzacs, but all servicemen and women who served Australia all around the world. So thank you to the Essendon Football Club. “I want to thank and mention all men and women who are serving our country’s interests, both at home and abroad, in war and in peacekeeping operations. Russell Crowe and girlfriend denied entry at restaurant

Actor Russell Crowe and his girlfriend Britney Theriot were refused entry at a Melbourne restaurant for not meeting the smart-casual dress code, according to a report. The pair went to eat at Mr Myagi, a Japanese-fusion establishment in Melbourne, wearing outfits they had played tennis in earlier that day, and the staff were quick to deny them entry. “He went there wearing a brand new Ralph Lauren polo, having just played a game of tennis and was turned away,” Crowe’s manager Grant Vandenberg told the Daily Mail Australia. Mr Miyagi describes itself as “casual but fancy” where “work gear, activewear, singlets, and thongs” are forbidden. The restaurant’s management doubled down on their decision to deny the pair service, saying no one is above their rules. “We treat everyone the same. It doesn’t matter who you are or if you are Russell Crowe. We’ve got a dress code that we push across every level,” restaurant owner Kristian Klein told The Herald Sun. “We are consistent with it and I don’t feel like it’s unreasonable," Klein added. “But I know personally if I’m in my thongs and my boardies, I’m not going to try and go to a nice restaurant, because I wouldn’t be dressed appropriately.” Klein said the staff member that denied Crowe’s entry did not know who the Gladiator actor was, and it was a “very unfortunate situation for everyone”. The restaurant had some fun with the situation, posting an updated dress code policy on Instagram. “Dress smart casual, unless you’re Russell Crowe, then wear whatevs,” the sign read. Mr Myiagi also addressed Crowe to clear the air. “Dear Russell, During your last visit it seems we got off on the wrong foot. After much reflection on what occurred, we have made a permanent change to our dress code,” the caption read. “We would love to see you again in the future, you’re always welcome at Mr. Miyagi.” According to the Daily Mail, radio broadcaster Steve Price and his partner were turned away from Mr Miyagi just days later for the same reason. Crowe has now joined the list of recent A-listers who were denied service from restaurants. Talk show host James Corden was banned from Balthazar, Keith McNally’s restaurant in Manhattan, in October 2022 after he allegedly mistreated the restaurant’s staff. Man hides hefty lottery win from wife and child

A Chinese man has kept his eye watering 219 million yuan (AUD$47,068,869) lottery win a secret from his wife and child so they don’t become lazy. Known only as Mr Li to conceal his identity, the man dressed up in a yellow cartoon costume when he accepted the huge win on October 24 at the lottery office in Nanning, in the southern region of Guangxi. “I did not tell my wife and child for fear that they would be too complacent and would not work or work hard in the future,” he told Nanning Evening News. Mr Li confessed that he bought 40 lottery tickets all of which had the same seven numbers, with the lottery company paying out 5.48 million yuan (AUD$1,177,811) for each ticket. Eventually he found out that he had the winning lottery numbers of 2, 15, 19, 26, 27, 29, and 2 and went to claim his prize. After receiving the hefty sum, Mr Li donated 5 million yuan (AUD$1,074,597) to charity and is still unsure of what to do with his fortune. Mr Li has been playing the lottery for a decade and only won minor prizes until this time round. “I regard buying the lottery as a hobby, and my family does not care. World’s Ugliest Dog crowned

A 17-year-old dog called Mr Happy Face has been dubbed the world’s ugliest dog. The Chihuahua-Chinese crested mix has an evil scientist look to it with a long tongue hanging out and boofy white hair. The event was held on June 25, with dog owners from around the US coming together to see whether or not their pet will win the title of the world’s ugliest dog. Mr Happy Face, who was adopted by musician Jeneda Benally in August 2021, was told by the shelter that he only had a few weeks left to live due to being neglected and the tumours he had. She said that Mr Happy Face “chose her” when she found out another dog she wanted had already been adopted. “I saw a creature who was indeed old, needed a second chance and deserved to be loved,” she said. “He came from a hoarder’s house where the conditions were deplorable. He was a survivor of abuse and neglect. “When I first met him, he was the happiest creature that I had ever met. He hobbled up to me and chose me. “I vowed that day, he would be so loved that he would never remember how awful his previous life had been. “Love, kindness and mommy kisses have helped him defy the anticipated short life that we all expected him to have with our family. “I don’t feel like I have the world’s ugliest dog, I feel like I’ve got the world’s most-loved dog who is bringing happiness to everybody.” Jeneda won a total of $US1500 ($A2170) after Mr Happy Face won the competition. Mrs Doubtfire actors 30 years on

The actors who played the children in Mrs Doubtfire have reunited in honour of the movie’s release almost 30 years ago. Lisa Jakub who played the older sister Lydia, Matthew Lawrence who played Chris the middle child, and Mara Wilson who played Natalie posed for a photo at their heartwarming get together. “Siblings” Lisa captioned the photo of her on-screen family, along with a heart emoji, while Mara captioned hers “Hilliard Family reunion”. Since the movie’s release, the actors have gone on to do their own thing, with only Matthew sticking to acting. Lisa, 43, quit acting at 22 and married Hollywood theatre manager Jeremy Jones in 2005. She currently works as a yoga teacher, speaker and writer. She wrote an autobiography called You Look Like That Girl. Last year, she launched Blue Mala, a wellness website to help those in need. Matthew, 42, continues to act and regularly appears in his siblings’ TV shows. Mara, 34, also well known for her role in Matilda, quit acting after tragically losing her mother. She did however, recently star in TV series BoJack Horseman as the recurring black widow NYC playwright "Jill Pill" Philipowicz, and has also released her own book, Where Am I Now? Image: Instagram

How Mr Bean came to be

We all grew up watching Rowan Atkinson in the much loved Mr Bean television series, animation and movies. But how did it all come to be? Atkinson, who actually has a degree in electrical engineering from Oxford University, came up with the show’s idea while studying. It was his love for acting and performing with the university’s comedy group known as “The Oxford Revue” which helped bring his character to life. The British actor had a stutter which would disappear while portraying a character but he was well received by his peers and eventually by large audiences. Atkinson described the show as “a child in a man’s body” and went on to create his dream which debuted on New Year’s Day in 1990 on ITV to a worldwide audience. Not many actors can boast that. Atkinson worked with fellow actor Richard Curtis, who saw a successful five-year run of Mr Bean which in turn saw the production of several movies. Then in 2002, an animated series of Mr Bean was also created, which saw it enjoyed by millions more around the globe. So how much did this make for Atkinson? Are you ready? Mrs Doubtfire not the only one in disguise

It’s the movie that keeps on giving and almost 30 years later Mrs Doubtfire continues to be a fan favourite. Starring the much-loved Robin Williams as Daniel, an unsuccessful actor who disguises himself as a female Scottish housekeeper to spend time with his children following a messy separation, it's a great movie for a rainy day. And one eagle-eyed viewer has pointed out an unexpected cameo and fun fact. “In Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), the poolside bartender is played by an actor credited under the nickname Dr. Toad,” he wrote on <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/comments/t4zp0l/in_mrs_doubtfire_1993_the_poolside_bartender_is/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reddit</a>. “But his real name was Robert Todd Williams, and he was Robin Williams’ older brother.” The post includes a photo from the scene where Daniel, dressed up as Mrs Doubtfire, is sitting at a bar while keeping an eye on his ex Miranda and his children, while out on a date with her new boyfriend Stu. The bartender in that scene is Robin’s brother, Robert. That was Robert’s only scene in any movie, as he works as a vintner by trade. Mr Big responds to two sexual assault allegations

Chris Noth has spoken out about recent sexual assault allegations, after two women claim they were assaulted by the 67-year-old. The Sex and the City actor has denied the allegations, saying the encounters were consensual. "The accusations against me made by individuals I met years, even decades, ago are categorically false," Noth said in a prepared statement. "These stories could've been from 30 years ago or 30 days ago — no always means no — that is a line I did not cross. The encounters were consensual. It's difficult not to question the timing of these stories coming out." "I don't know for certain why they are surfacing now, but I do know this: I did not assault these women." Chris has reentered the pop culture conversation recently, as his return to the screen as Mr Big in the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That premiered last week. Woman’s eyebrow procedure leaves her “looking like Mr Bean”

UK mum Sarah Donnelly has proved that we go to extraordinary lengths for beauty. Sarah took to Tik Tok to share the results of a beauty treatment that she said left her “looking like Mr Bean”. She went to have her eyebrows laminated, which according to <a href="https://www.elle.com/uk/beauty/a29030088/eyebrow-lamination-review/">Elle magazine</a>, “is like a lash lift for your brows ... Every hair stands to attention, giving a result very similar to the full and feathery effect of microblading, but without any needling or pain.” During the procedure, eyebrow hairs are “straightened” using a chemical solution that has results lasting for several weeks. As Sarah showed off her new brows to her online followers, she said she “couldn’t stop laughing”. In hysterics in her car after her treatment, Sarah said, “I look ridiculous! What have I done to myself?” “I don’t know whether I want to laugh or cry.” The clip was captioned, “I was trying to keep up with the kids, so I got my brows laminated, and this happened.” Among the 1,600 comments on the video, one follower likened her thick black brows to Mr Bean, to which Sarah responded, “Hilarious! I actually really look like him, don’t I?” Luckily, Sarah was able to find the humour in the situation, as she even referred to her new brows as “slugs” in one comment. While many poked fun at the trendy procedure, one person questioned why the beauty professionals would use such a dark tint colour. Natasha Beth Darcy found guilty of murder

NSW woman Natasha Beth Darcy has been found guilty of murdering her sheep farmer partner Mathew Dunbar. After sedating and gassing Dunbar, Darcy allegedly screamed at paramedics to perform CPR on him after declaring him dead. Darcy told authorities and first responders that he had killed himself, but after more than two days of deliberations, a NSW Supreme Court Jury found the 46-year-old woman guilty of murder. Dunbar was found dead on his bed in his property in the Northern Tablelands town of Walcha on August 2nd, 2017. The pair met on a dating site, but the Crown alleges that it didn't take long for Darcy to push Dunbar to change his will so that she would inherit his $3.5 million property. Prosecutor Brett Hatfield said that it didn't take long for Darcy to research ways to kill Dunbar, with numerous Google searches on topics including "how to commit murder", redback spiders and suicide. “He may have desperately wanted love and a family, but what did he get?” he said. “A cold and calculating person who was determined to kill him and inherit his wealth.” It was also revealed that Darcy's estranged husband, paramedic Colin Crossman, had a close call with death as she hit him on the head with a hammer in 2009 and days later, sedated him and burnt down their house as he slept. Referring to a $700,000 life insurance policy on his life, Hatfield said it showed Darcy had a “tendency to sedate and inflict serious harm on her domestic partners for financial gain”. However, Justice Julia Lonergan directed the jurors to put the idea of assisted suicide out of their minds as there was an absence of any evidence about such a scenario. Lonergan said that Hatfield "exploited" Dunbar's depression to kill him in a way that made it look like a suicide. Darcy was accused of sedating her partner using a Nutribullet to blend a cocktail of sedatives, before moving a gas tank in his room and gassing him in his bed. She told police of finding him unresponsive in his bed, saying “This is the hardest bit of all. I can’t get the image out of my head.” “It is killing me,” Darcy said. She will face a sentencing hearing on October 1. Heartbreaking double tragedy behind Eddie McGuire’s resignation

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire and former AFL star Luke Darcy have opened up about their exit from Triple M’s Hot Breakfast show. The pair both made headlines across the nation after it was revealed they were leaving the popular breakfast radio program. McGuire was forced to deny rumours that he and Darcy had been sacked. He instead announced that his family had been behind his decision to walk away from Triple M after 11 years. Both McGuire and Darcy both had their own personal tragedies that pushed them to step down. McGuire's mum Bridie died just two days after Darcy sadly lost his father - former VFL football player, David. “The self-reflection and losing someone close to you … you re-evaluate things that are important and, for me, it always comes back to family,” Darcy said. “It had a massive impact on me, and a part of my decision making (to leave breakfast radio) as well. “We need to work and pursue great things like the Hot Breakfast to look after our families, but at the same time, you don’t want to miss the point of life. I’m massive on that life balance part. “This year, we’ve had the chance to stop, reflect and look at our situations.” McGuire said his mother's passing helped him understand Darcy's situation. He went on to say his own commitment to his family made the decision to quit easier to make. “Darce’s father was such a great friend of the show, and so well loved. My mum passed two days later, but we knew it was imminent. My view is, If you don’t learn from this year, you won’t learn from much.” McGuire got the opportunity to spend quality time inside the AFL's Gold Coast hub with his son Joe shortly after he lost his mum. “I spent a lot of time with my son Joe, and spent no time with my son Xander and my wife Carla who were back in Melbourne. You think, ‘Hang on, these are the things that matter,'" McGuire said. “We came to work every day for our family. “We don’t regret that we weren’t there to drive them to school. That would be great in a perfect world where money falls off a tree. The Collingwood president revealed he’d always promised his family he would quit breakfast radio once his sons had both finished school. “Those closest to me have always known that I continued with breakfast radio while my boys were at school and now my youngest has finished it’s time too for me to finish up a wonderful 11 year run with a 4 am alarm,” McGuire said last week. The Triple M Hot Breakfast has been losing audience share as of late. The show is down 0.9 points to 5.8% in recent ratings but McGuire denies it is due to him and co-host Darcy's departure. “They (Triple M) were keen to look at planning for the next five years, and we thought, ‘This is a good way to finish,'" McGuire told the Herald Sun. “But, in my mind, it was probably since June I’ve known it would be the last year.”

Australia’s "Mr Movies" Bill Collins dies aged 84

Bill Collins, Australia’s favourite film reviewer and TV presenter, has died at the age of 84. Better known as Mr Movies, the renowned presenter and interviewer of Foxtel’s Golden Years of Hollywood died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday. Foxtel has paid tribute to the legendary film critic and film historian, journalist, author and lecturer in a heartfelt statement. “Bill was 84 and lived a life filled with love and devotion for and from his family,” the announcement read. “It was also filled with passion for movies and Hollywood and all the adventures and opportunities associated with his 55-year career in the entertainment industry. “Bill introduced generations of Australians to the world of movies. “His passion for filmmaking, his eye for detail and his knowledge of the work of the great screen talents, added with his natural charisma and spirited presentations, turned watching a movie presented by Bill into an ‘event’.” More to come.

Woolworths launches special $2 coins commemorating beloved TV icon

Beloved Aussie TV icon Mr Squiggle is celebrating its 60-year anniversary, and Woolworths is joining in the celebrations by releasing a limited-edition line of $2 coins. The supermarket giant has partnered with the national coin producer, Royal Australian Mint to create four coin designs depicting Mr Squiggle and other famous characters from the eponymous show. The coins will be released in stages over the coming weeks. The first $2 design, featuring Mr Squiggle, is available in Woolworths registers this week, while the next three coins featuring Gus the Snail, Bill Steamshovel and Blackboard will be released on February 20, February 27 and March 6 respectively. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en-gb"> Woolworths and the Royal Australian Mint have joined forces to celebrate Mr Squiggles 60th Birthday with the release of four coloured $2 coins. Rowan Atkinson is set to become a dad for the third time at the age of 62.
